WIDOW’S SON RESTORED TO LIFE                            1 Kings 17:17-24

And she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a cruse; and now, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” (v12)

The widow was God’s instrument to sustain Elijah during the three years of famine that ravaged Israel. Though it was a tough time for all (even tougher for the widow who had no helper), the woman honoured God’s word through Elijah as she attended to the man of God before herself and her son. And God also honoured her with abundance. After these things, the widow’s son fell ill and died s a result of the sickness. In sorrow, the woman cried unto Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son? (v18) Her husband’s death was enough tragedy the death of the son again could make life unbearable for her. Elijah took the dead son, laid him on his bed and laid flat on him.” (Then he cried out to the Lord, “O Lord my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am straying with, by causing her son to die? “O Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” (vv 20-21) As the man of God prayed, God restored the boy’s life, and he gave him back to his mother alive. At this, the woman said, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.” (v24).
