NEEDED IN EVERY HOME Mark 9:42-50
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another. (v50)
There can be little doubt that the family is being assailed from many directions. How sad that in an age when millions of houses are being broken. A well known marriage guidance counselor claims that half the troubles in the home could be overcome if all concerned understood that the power of a simple apology often saves a situation. Someone has said. An apology is a friendship preserver; is often a debt of honour, is never a sign of weakness; is an antitode for hatred costs nothing but one’s pride; always saves more than it costs and is a device needed in every home.
In today’s text Jesus says, “Have salt in yourself. In other words, don’t be dependent on your environment for life’s taste. Draw from the life of God within you, and then in the rollercoaster of family life it will mean that you remain steady and are not going up and down emotionally. In my view, one of the greatest causes of breaking peace with others is the sense of tastelessness within ourselves. We feel out of sorts with others because we are out of sorts with ourselves. A Christian who keeps in daily touch with God through prayer and the reading of His Word will be held together by the truth that life has inward taste, no matter what happens on the outside. Inward salt makes for outward peace.
PRAYER LINE: Father, may I always have enough salt within myself as a result of my daily contact with You, to hold the home together, and in all other situations as well. In Jesus’ Name I ask it. Amen. (EDWJ)
