A WRONG VIEW OF GOD                                                     James 5:13-20

“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:” (v14)

What do we do when we pray for healing, receive good medical attention, but still there is no release or even relief? First, even though we may have already prayed for healing, it is right to continue to do so and invite other Christians friends, if possible, to join us in a prayerful pursuit of healing. Take today’s text, which tells us that when we fall sick we call on the elders of the church and ask them to anoint us with oil. Christians hold different views regarding this text. Some say our first action when we become ill should be to call for the elders and not a medical doctor, whereas others advocate trying a medical remedy first and if that fails, to then call for the elders. Each person must decide what they wish to do. God heals directly; but He also heals through medicine. We also need to remember that in James’ day there were few medical doctors, and those that existed did not have the resources available today. We need to be balanced and also recognize that God has put medical practitioners in the community to help us. If we go to a doctor first and not to the elders, don’t then think that God will refuse to have anything to do with you. That is simply not true of God’s character and what we read of Him in the Bible. If that is the way you think God acts, then you need to change your view of Him.

PRAYER LINE: God, forgive me if I hold  in my heart a wrong image of You. Help me to remember that You have a Father’s heart. You relate to me with love, care and understanding. In Jesus’ Name. I pray. Amen. (EDWJ)

Listening may be the most loving and Christlike thing to do today.
