“By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain… and by it he being dead yet speaketh (V4)

Hebrews Chapter 11 is often called the FAITH CHAPTER. It is the Hall of fame, the gallery of men and women throughout the ages who excelled in living by faith… faith is believing, without seeing, that whatever God says is true, and acting upon that belief. Abel is the very first hero of faith. He recognized his sin in the very beginning, for God declares that “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23) Abel stood before God, guilty, a sinner needing atonement. He brought along a sacrifice of blood-not his own blood, but the blood of a spotless lamb. His sacrifice was a type of the dying Lamb of God, an acceptance by faith of God’s promise to provide a REDEEMER. This was the only acceptable sacrifice for sin, for “without shedding of blood is no remission” (Heb 9:22) It was for this act, and this act alone, that Abel was accepted, “God testifying”-not of him, but – “of his gifts”. When God delivered His church from Egypt, He told Moses to slay a lamb. He was to take the blood and sprinkle that blood of the lamb, pour it in a basin, dip hyssop in the blood on the door posts and on the lintel of the house. We see in the account of Abel’s sacrifice that he was declared righteous. By reason of his faith, he became justified. This is a beautiful experience. Being justified means that he was put into the same position as one who had never sinned. He stands before God with his sacrifice, identified with the Lamb. (R. W Schambach)
