THE HEART OF A SERVANT (2)                                   Matthew 20:13-15

But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?  (v13)

Cont. from D235 Notice the response of the Owner to the murmuring of these men. “But he answered one of them and said “Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way… is your eye evil because I am good? (vv 13-15)

God is saying, “Are you going to allow your heart to be defiled with jealousy because I show to another the same goodness I have shown you? True servant isn’t working for a certain reward. A true servant realizes that the Master is his reward. We are not in competition with each other.

The prize doesn’t go to the swiftest in this race. It goes to the one who runs faithfully and finishes his own personal  course. It is the insecure labourer who always needs to be number one. It is the ambitions field hand who is always concerned about the status of the other workers. Jesus ended this teaching by saying “So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen (v16) The idea is not to take the position of being last in order to be first. Rather, the idea is,  “I would like to be last, so that I am in the position to push the person in front of me to the place of being first.” Jesus said that the greatest in the Kingdom is the servant of all. PRAYER LINE: Dear Lord, may Your love compel us to show love to others. Give us sensitivity to Your Spirit that we might know how to encourage them in their walk with You.
