SELFISH AMBITION (1) Mark 10:35-40
But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? (v38)
(1) DESIRE FOR RECOGNITION OF MEN
At one point of His earthly ministry, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up on a mountain (Mark 9:2-7) As Jesus prayed, they witnessed His being transfigured before them. His clothes and skin became brilliantly white. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began to counsel with Jesus After this remarkable event, the three disciples and Jesus proceeded down the mountain to the valley below. As they approached the camp, Jesus saw His other disciples gathered in a circle. It was obvious by the commotion that the disciples were in a heated debate among themselves. At the center, Jesus saw a bewildered father standing hand in hand with his boy at his side. Jesus took the boy aside and quickly drove out the evil spirit. When the disciples asked Jesus why they had been unable to cast out the demon. Jesus’ response was, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29) The disciples had just experienced an embarrassing failure. They were debating who was the greatest among them. Jesus knowing about their discussion on the road confronted them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” (v35) Jesus said “But many who are first will be last, and the last first” (Mark 10:31) Read John 5:41; 5:44 (MIKE FEHLAUeR)
