WHAT IS PLEASING TO HIM                             Hebrews 13:15-21

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.  (v16)

One of the first things that would help new Christians early on in their faith journey is the truth that God wants us to live lives that are well pleasing to Him. My pastor said among other things, “The purpose of God for you is to make you holy. He continued, “It is not a matter of happiness first and holiness if possible, but holiness first and happiness as a consequence. I wasn’t quite sure that I wanted to be holy for holiness to me in those early days after my conversion meant carrying the Bible and wearing a solemn expression. I wasn’t certain what the words meant. It had a pious and musty feel about it and hinted a restraint, unhappiness or repression carried to unnatural lengths. When I expressed all these concerns to my pastor, he said: ‘If you don’t like the word “holy” then try the word ‘deferent,’ for that is what a holy person is – someone who is different and set apart from the world. He went on to explain that being set apart from the world did not involve entering a monastery. Holiness is not developed in isolation to other humans but by approaching life with a difference of reference and world – view. In a sense it is a paradox, we are called by God to become involved in the world and get to be separated from it. We take our place in the world and contribute to it, but we do not live by its standards – we have been separated for God and live by the laws of the kingdom of God. That is what holiness is all about.

PRAYER LINE:  God, please flood Your Church with light on this important issue. We are desperately in need of a deeper emphasis on holy living. Help us, heavenly Father, I pray. Amen. (EDWJ)

Prayer is an acknowledgement of our need for God.
