TURNING WEAKNESS TO STRENGTH                        Hebrews 11:30

“Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.” (v34)

The writer to the Hebrews in today’s reading, gives us a long list of people whose negative experiences God turned into positives. In A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway wrote that although the world breaks everyone, “many are strong at the broken places.” Hemingway was drawing attention to the fact that some people are able to recover from the experience of feeling broken and go on to be stronger than they were before. The human spirit can rise to great heights when faced with trauma and trouble, and there are multitudes of people who though not committed Christians, draw on their inner strength to survive and recover from the most devastating experiences. The exciting thing about the Christian life, however, is that whether or not we are temperamentarily gifted with a strong fighting spirit from God and every weakness can be turned into strength. There is nothing that happens to us which cannot be transformed by God into good.  This is what happens as we place ourselves in God’s life to bring you to place ourselves in God’s hands. Has something happened recently in your life to bring you to place of spiritual or psychological struggle? Has it left you feeling woefully weak and inadequate? Then take heart – God specialises in matching His ability to your disability. By His transforming grace your frustration can become fruitful. You can be strong at the broken places.

PRAYER LINE: Father, Your Word says it can What You have done for others, You can do also for me. I am eager to experience it. Grant that it may be so. In Jesus’ Name. (EDWJ)

Every temptation is an opportunity to flee to God.
