TREAT YOUR PARENTS JUSTLY                                  Matthew 15:1-9

For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’ (v4)

A man decided to take his aged father to the old people’s home, because he had no time to care for his father. He took his young son with him in order to show him how the old people’s home looked like. On their way, the child curiously asked why grandpa was being taken to the home and the father answered, “Well, because I have no time to take care of him.” The son replied, “Thank you daddy for taking me along. When you grow old and I have no time to take care of you, I will take you to the home.” The man was stunned, turned back and took his father back home.

The Pharisees allowed men to dedicate money to God’s Temple that otherwise would have gone to support their parents. They claimed to dedicate their money to God while they abandon the care of their parents. As noble as this may seem, it becomes displeasing to God because God demands obedience to His commands, which includes taking care of one’s parents. Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for making laws that help them to circumvent taking care of their parents. We might heed Jesus’ teaching to give our parents the best of care, not abdicating our responsibility for any reason. Note that the command to care for one’s parents attracts God’s blessings and promise of long life. How are you treating your parents. Those who fail to honour and take care of their parents are writing a letter of abandonment in their old age.

PRAYER LINE: Appreciate God for your parents for bringing you into the world. Ask for grace and provision to care for them.
