JOSHUA DISCERNED AS NEW LEADER   Deuteronomy 31:14-15; 23, 34:9

And the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, the days approach when you must die; call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tent of meeting. (Deut. 31:14)

A significant life is one that seeks every opportunity to serve. Since we were created in God’s image, we instinctively recognized true greatness as service to others. The passing of baton from Moses to Joshua as Israel’s leader was smooth and without any prolong search or struggle. Joshua had been Moses’ assistant over the years. God first revealed Joshua to Moses as his successor on Mount Abarim in Numbers 27:23. When the time came for Joshua to succeed Moses, God spelt out the procedure for the transition. Moses carried out God’s directive to the letter. He never argued with God. The Lord blessed Joshua with wisdom as Moses laid his hands on him. A close examination of the transition of leadership above shows clearly a total departure from what we practice today in churches, Christian institutions and organizations. God’s Spirit is often given minimal consideration when choosing a leader. Civilization has put such factors as education, tribalism, geo-political zone, secular experience, age and the likes above earnestly seeking God’s choice and really discerning it before taking decisions. The result is that many who are in the position of leadership lack direct wisdom from God. At best, they operate with human wisdom under the permissive will of God. We need to make amends and return completely to God’s own way of choosing leaders.

PRAYER LINE: Father, help us at all times to choose Your will into leadership positions.
