THE SON IS THE MESSAGE                                                   John 14:1-14

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father (v 9)

The only way God can be known as He really is, is through Jesus, His Son. Our knowledge of God will never grow deep unless we have an ongoing relationship with Jesus. If the invisible God had not become visible, our knowledge of Him would have remained very limited. The Old Testament characters knew God, of course, but the divine revelation was made complete in the person of His Son. To know Jesus is to know God, and to know God is to know Jesus. In the passage before us today we see Philip asking, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us (v8). Jesus’ reply was simple but bursting with life – changing truth; “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father,” Here is the wonder and mystery of the Trinity –again, as Jesus said: I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). If we do not filter our ideas about God through Jesus, then we can easily reach conclusions about Him that are faulty. A teacher was once talking to some children and asked what they thought of Jesus. A little boy put up his hand and said, “Jesus is the best photograph God ever had taken.” Hear Dr. E. Stanley Jones commented. “We see God in the face of Jesus Christ or we do not see Him.” The corollary  of that statement is that if we have not seen God in the face of Jesus, we have not seen the Father. We can see the Father only in the Son. The ancient prophets brought the message, but the Son is the message. The gospel is His person.

PRAYER LINE: Lord Jesus, I see the Father in You – in who You are and what You do and what You say. You are the language of eternity translated into the speech of time. You are my God. Amen (EDWJ)
