BELIEVING AND SUFFERING IN CHRIST Philippians 1:27-30
For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, (v29)
As believers in Christ, we are not immune to suffering. In fact, from the beginning, suffering, persuasion and the like have accompanied the belief in and acceptance of Jesus as Saviour and Lord. It is not that believers in Christ-seek suffering, as if there were virtues in pain. But when we know that our message and example are having an effect and that God considers us worthy to represent Him (Acts 5:41)
Besides, suffering because of the Gospel of Jesus Christ has the benefits of: (1) taking our eyes off earthly concerns and comforts; (2) eliminating fake and pretentious believers from the brethren (3) Strengthening the faith of believers who endure and stand their ground in the Lord and (4) serving as an example for others. Therefore, whatever has been your lot or the situation you are going through because of your faith in Jesus; consider it not peculiar to you. It is a temporary experience and remember the glory that awaits you in heaven (2 Corinthians 4:17-18) Do not forget the example of Jesus who also endured suffering, humiliation, shame and pains of the cross because He saw ahead the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2) There is light at the end of the tunnel.
