WHEN UNHEALTHY THOUGHTS PERSIST                           Psalm 55:1-23

Attend to me, and answer me; I am overcome by my trouble. I am distraught (v2)

(8 Pain of Unhealthy Thoughts. Many Christians are worn down with the pain and pressure of thoughts that they know they ought not to be thinking but cannot rid themselves of. In some people all other troubles are minor in comparison with this. A Christian friend said “My mind is rather like this merry-go-round-lustful images and wrong thoughts go round in my head all the time. They lash me to such an extent that sometimes I despair and feel I will never be free of them.” Tears fell as he spoke. I saw through those tears deep into his soul and what I saw drew deep compassion from me.

Most of us, I am sure, find wrong thoughts and images arising in our minds on occasions, but think of those who have to fight a battle with them continually. There are many in the Christian Church who are engaged in fighting such battles. They are not only assaulted by wrong thoughts but subjugated by them. Because of this the finer fruits of spiritual growth seldom blossom in their lives. Their sad condition may remain a mystery to those who know nothing of this type of struggle, but God to whom all hearts are open and all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden. He knows. And remember my afflicted or suffering friend, that the divine heart is swift to help those who turn their hearts to Him.

PRAYER LINE: God my Father, I am so grateful that there is no problem so great that You cannot deliver me from it. When unhealthy thoughts persist. Please provide for me a way of escape I pray. In Jesus’ Name. Amen. (EDWJ)
