IS GOD GOOD?                                                            Psalm 119:65-72

Thou art good and doest good; teach me thy statutes. (v68)

(7 Pain of Shattered Dreams. I am thinking of such things as a business failure, a broken engagement, a marriage that is on the rocks a career that has hit a roadblock; and so on. In one form or another, many people experience shattered dreams at some point in their lives. Perhaps you are in that situation at this very moment. When that happens the pain can be intense and we look for ways to dull it.

A friend of mine has spent time talking to an elderly widow who frequently speaks at meetings and has been a help to hundreds who have listened to her story. This widow had just put her experiences in writing, but was unable to find a publisher willing to publish her manuscript. She felt a growing sense of pointlessness, which hurt – and hurt deeply of course, there are far more serious shattered dreams than that, but this simply illustrates that when our pains are for some reasons crossed or frustrated, pain arises in varying degrees and the goal then is always to handle the pain.

But in addition to finding ways to handle pain, a major problem people have to struggle with when dreams are shattered is to maintain hope. Larry Crabb says that the question uppermost in people’s minds when a dream is shattered is this: Is God really at work right now? Is He pursuing a good purpose that requires this to happen? Yes, says the psalmist in today’s text. I agree. Do you?

PRAYER LINE: Father, I long with all my heart to affirm Your goodness with the same confidence shown by the psalmist. If there are doubts within me, then wash them away I pray. Amen. (EDWJ)
