GOD BLESSED ABRAHAM FOR OBEDIENCE Genesis 22:15-19
“blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. (v17)
Following orders unquestionably is one of the hallmarks of the military. Junior officers are taught to doggedly follow orders from their superior whether or not they think the command is right. A military officer once said, “We follow higher orders because we know that whatever is commanded is for the overall good of the Army and the nation we are defending. God is happy when His children follow His orders unquestionably. Abraham’s obedience was manifested in that he task a step to relocate when God asked him to (Genesis 12:1-4) His obedience was crowned by his prompt attempt at sacrificing his only son, Isaac. And this did not go unnoticed to God. For the second time, God came to Abraham to reiterate His covenant to bless him and his descendants because “you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son.” Abraham was not the only recipient of this blessing; his generation was also blessed. Obedience is the best way to honour God for what He has done for us and to show how much we love Him. How many believers run from pillar to post today seeking after blessing while they treat obedience with levity? The Bible is filled with instructions for us to obey the Lord and follow Him wholeheartedly (Deuteronomy 28:1; John 14:23) It is one thing to worship and praise God at church; it is quite another to move out into the world and worship Him through daily obedience. As a magnet will not fail to attract metal so will obedience not fail to attract God’s blessings.
PRAYER LINE: O Lord, give me a heart to obey You at all times. (NBC)
