“Riches do not profit in the day of wrath: But righteousness delivers from death” (v4)

WEALTH has absolutely no bearing on our relationship with God or how we will spend eternity. How wonderful it is that God does not accept us into His Kingdom based on how much wealth we can acquire! This was a point about which many were confused even at the time of Christ. Contrary to what the Pharisees taught, material wealth was not a measure of one’s acceptability before God. Or contrary to what the prosperity theologians teach today, wealth is not a measure of one’s faith in Jesus Christ. Prov 11:28 says “He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage”.

Acceptability before God comes for us just as it did for the Old Testament believers – by grace, through faith, based on blood. A fat cheque book does not prove one’s acceptability before God, nor does luxurious house or an expansive set of clothes. It should be said too, that a lavish, impressive church building proves nothing about a congregation’s relationship with the Lord, even if some claim that a massive monument of architecture is a “good witness” to the community. Wealth simply does not equal righteousness. (Kenneth M. Durham)

PRAYER LINE: My Father and my God, please enable me to come to terms with the truth that he who trusts in his riches will fall. But the righteous will flourish in due season. Amen
