“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (Rom 14:17) David knew if he was to maintain his joy, he had to encourage himself in the Lord. You see, joy comes from inside you. It’s up to us to draw it out. Jesus said that if we drink of the water He gives, it will become a well of water springing up to eternal life. The joy of the Lord is like well water. You’ve got to prime the pump to get it flowing. As we encourage ourselves, it primes that joy deep inside us to rise up and flow forth. We won’t need to prime the pump of joy when we’re in heaven; its here on earth that we get to do this. As you encourage yourself, that joy will bubble up and become stronger and stronger. If you are joyful, people’s words and actions against you won’t seem as powerful. When you are joyful and happy in trials, it attracts God to you because you are acting on your faith. The apostle Paul said “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (V1-17)

Remember, joy is a choice. When you encounter a tough time, you face a crossroad, the street of sadness, seriousness or joy path. You make a choice of joy or sadness every time. Joy is also “oil” in a marriage or a relationship. (Robert Hardon)
